Custodial contact for people with disability

The charts below show information on individuals who had contact with adult or youth custody and specific disability support services between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2018. 

 

1. What is the profile of adult prisoners with disability?

There were 106,544 people who had contact with adult custody (both sentenced and unsentenced) in NSW between 2009 and 2018. Of this number, 51,066 or 47.9% were identified as people with disability.

 

 

Of the 51,066 adult prisoners between 2009 and 2018:

  • 43,347 or 40.7% had psychosocial disability. 
  • 16,948 or 15.9% had physical disability.
  • 11,122 or 10.4% had cognitive disability.

 


2. What is the profile of young people with disability in detention?

There were 10,886 young people who had contact with youth detention (both sentenced and unsentenced) in NSW between 2009 and 2018. Of this number, 4,444 or 40.8% were identified as people with disability.
 

Of the 10,886 young people in detention between 2009 and 2018:

  • 3,182 or 29.2% had psychosocial disability. 
  • 2,399 or 22.0% had cognitive disability.
  • 765 or 7.0% had physical disability.
