Summary


Key findings include: 

  • Local Court and Supreme Court finalisations were stable between 2023 and 2024, while District Court finalisations increased 6% and Children’s Court finalisations increased 7%.
  • Local Court finalisations for domestic violence increased 3% from 2023 to 2024, and accounted for 26% of all Local Court finalisations in 2024.
  • The percentage of defendants bail refused at finalisation rose from 7.5% in 2023 to 9.2% in 2024.  Custodial penalties increased from 8.7% in 2023 to 9.8% in 2024.
  • In 2024, defended hearings in the Local Court took 275 days to finalise, 28 days longer than in 2020.  In 2024 District Court trials took 834 days to finalise, 109 days longer than in 2020. (Median days from arrest to finalisation.)
