The adult custody population increased 6.2% over the year to June 2026, reaching 13,960 adults. Growth was largely driven by remand, which now accounts for 46% of all adults in custody.
Domestic violence offences were a major contributor to remand growth. Around one-third of all adults on remand are now in custody for a DV-related offence.
There were 4,726 Aboriginal adults in custody in June 2026, accounting for 33.9% of the adult custody population. The Aboriginal custody population grew by 6.3% (282 people) over the year to June 2026, with remand driving most of this increase
The youth detention population remained stable at 242 young people, but the proportion on remand increased to 85.1%, while the sentenced detention population fell to a record low of 36 young people.
There were 130 Aboriginal young people in detention, accounting for 53.7% of all young people in custody. The number of Aboriginal young people in detention fell by 11% over the past year, driven by a decline in sentenced detention
