Major offence trends: In the 24 months to March 2026, recorded criminal incidents increased for two of the 13 major offence categories – steal from retail store (up 9.1%) and other stealing offences (up 3.1%), while robbery declined 8.2%. All other major crime categories showed no significant change.
Regional crime trends: Regional NSW as a whole saw significant increases in two of the 13 major crime categories in the 24 months to March 2026 (domestic violence related assault – up 1.4%, and steal from retail – up 8.4%). All other major offences remained stable. Greater Sydney saw two offences trending down (robbery – down 9.1% and steal from motor vehicle – down 2.9%) and two offences trending up (steal from retail store - up 9.6% and other stealing offences - up 5.7%).
Charges against adults and young people: The number of adults proceeded against to court by NSW Police increased significantly over the last two years (up 10.0%); a third of this increase was due to domestic violence charges. The number of young people proceeded against to court was stable over the last two years but trended down in Regional NSW (down 12.5%).
