Over the past 20 years, clear up rates have increased, and crime rates have declined across several key offence categories. As a result, the anticipated decrease in court workload—expected from the decline in crime rates—has been largely offset by an increase in the proportion of offenders being brought before the courts.
The chart below shows the clear up rate for major violent and property offences over the past 20 years.
An incident is defined as being "cleared up" if legal action is taken within 90 days of the incident being reported to Police. This differs from the police's internal use of the term "cleared up," which may also include incidents where legal action is either undesirable or not possible.
